Admit it…sometimes you want to punish your friends for drinking your beer. They come over, they just assume they can dig in, and suddenly you’re looking at a forlorn little fridge full of only…shudder…food. Go ahead, let them drink all they want, but tell them they can only do it with the shock bottle opener – it’ll whack them with a nice little electric charge with every beer they open.

PS – Anybody else get a feeling this wasn’t on purpose…that they’re just making the best of a design flaw? At least it’s less than four bucks, anwyay.

We’ve never played this particular game before, but it has all the trappings of a good beer-soaked night: simple rules that are hard to execute. Actually that’s all you need for a good drinking game if you ask us, which you totally did. All you need to remember are three phrases: Fuzzy duck, Ducky Fuzz, and Does he? It all seems so easy…

If you play with us, though…leave your stupid fake beard at home.

dogfish head 60 minute ipa

Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA (originally posted 6/1/2008)
ABV: 6%
Volume: 12 oz.
Glass: Okocim .5 L curved glass
Purchased at: Hopewell Valley Wines
Consumed on: 02/08/08

first impression: Nice though fleeting head. Scent overwhelming with hops in the best way. Quite pale and varied in color, and very clear. Just a bit bubbly and active in the glass. Hoppy bite is nice and heady. Fairly smooth, esp. compared to 90 Minute, and other hoppy brews, but still very nice. Good malty overtones. A very enjoyable brew, if a bit smooth for my tastes.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26XE_hRchD4

Visuals — Color, depth, belgian lace, legs: Color is rich and varied. Body is deep and malleable with movement. Lace is nice, if a bit light and airy.

Olfactory — Aroma: Hops are most present, thought the scent is a bit wheaty.

Taste — Hoppiness, bite, maltiness, flavor: Bite is nice but overtaken with sweetness and a bit of cloy, which intrudes. Still, very nice overall.

Tactile — weight, mouthfeel: Weight is good for a lighter brew. Stands tall as an IPA, almost as though it were a stout. Bites throughout tasting – a bit airy and carbonated, but not too much so.

second impression: A very nice brew, quite hoppy, a bit bitter, and tasty throughout. Color and weight are average, but flavor is enjoyable and attractive. Tends to be pricey for value.

We were excited (and a bit nervous) to try it after its creator told us of its 2-3 second delivery time, and when we couldn’t browbeat any of the interns into stepping up to the plate, our fearless leader himself was the first to try it.

That’s right – Editor in Chief vs Bottle Throttle in a fight to the drunk.

We have to admit we were a little thrown by the simplicity of the Bottle Throttle at first. It looks basically like the nipple of a baby bottle mated with your gym teacher’s whistle, then had a drinking straw stuck up its ass, and we were curious how effective it would be.

We were impressed with the durability of the Throttle’s material, however, and how easily it slipped over the neck of the beer bottle, like it was born to be there. The lanyard was a nice touch too, making sure we didn’t lose it in between rounds, and we can see these things sweeping the nation as the next fad in neckwear – move over Flavor Flav’s clock.

Round One
Our Editor in Chief slips the Throttle over the neck of the bottle and eyes his competitor with grim determination. He cautiously moves it to his lips and tilts it back, taking a small swig “just to see what the action was like.” He says there is the tiniest delay and a gurgling noise as the beer makes its way past the drinking straw that goes to the bottom of the bottle, but no one else notices it.

He puts the bottle to about a 45 degree angle and consumes the beer; nowhere near as aggressive as he could have been, he’s feeling his opponent out.

Time: 8 Seconds
Round Winner: Bottle Throttle

Round Two
Now our fearless leader has his beer legs under him, and he comes in swinging. He slaps the contraption onto another bottle and knocks it back to a near 90-degree angle. A bit of foam shoots out of the corners of his mouth and his jaw works frantically like some kind of strange bearded baby animal nursing at a beer teat, but he gets it all down.

Time: 5 Seconds
Round Winner: Tie

Round Three
By now, EiC knows what’s coming and he’s determined to get the Bottle Throttle against the ropes. He tilts his head just so, opens his throat, and the beer is gone before the stopwatch is even started. General consensus puts the time at somewhere near 2-3 seconds, and the young whippersnapper interns look on with renewed admiration.

Time: 2-3 Seconds
Round Winner: Editor in Chief

Verdict:
Like Little Mac from Punchout, the Bottle Throttle packs a mean punch for such a small package. It was simpler to use and more portable than many of the funneling/shotgunning tools we’ve tried, and at ten bucks a pop, more affordable too. We recommend this thing for tailgating, parties, or even just posing a challenge to yourself on a Wednesday night. Just make sure you have some spare drinking straws around.

Buy yours at Bottle Throttle, and don’t forget – free shipping all summer if you buy them in packages of two.

The rain held off, we had a great crowd, and we brewed a (potentially) great beer. Last night we brewed another Belgian witbier, though we used about 40% less fresh ginger. If Joel had been around we probably would have ended up using more ginger without Jeff’s knowledge, as Joel is what we call a “Ginger Fiend.” This was a popular beer last time we brewed it, so we’re excited to see if we can’t make it even better this time around.

A huge thanks goes out to Sir Melvin Pants (we’re trying to come up with a nickname for him since Melvin Van Peebles was already taken) for helping us figure out our fancy new chilling setup. Expect a more detailed post on that once Joel stops slacking. Until then, please enjoy this artsy shot of one of our fermenters, courtesy of Jeanine.

In other news, we kegged our Eye Patch Ale and drained the yeast off of last week’s barleywine, which is attenuating nicely. And I also think Jeff did some stuff with a spreadsheet. But that’s not really new… just boring. Thanks to all who came out, hope to see you soon!

A new beer magazine, Beer Connoisseur, launched their online site last week (a print version will be following soon). Why is this important? Because we are officially blogging for them on how to start a brewery under the title, “From Our House to the Brewhouse.”

Sign up for a free account if you want to read our stuff. You can then navigate to the blogs section and find the blog with the sexiest-looking writer. They are also looking for feedback on the site in general, so be sure to drop them a line if you have anything!

Last night was what we call “busy.” Of course, our annual barleywine brew session is always a little busier than normal because we don’t normally have a 47 pound grain bill and don’t usually have to worry about crushing cloves and cinnamon sticks and other ingredients best left to potpourri gift baskets. Also we were busy getting our chilling system working correctly (thanks to Melvin for his expertise). And I am proud to say that we chilled that wort completely in about 16 minutes, compared to the usual 45 minutes.

GO TEAM MONDAY NIGHT!

Our mashtun is usually quite capable, but it is not capable of handling 47 pounds of grain. And so we had to add some DME. As newcomer John pointed out, this is not cheating if you’re brewing a barleywine. It’s just science.

We had our ginger-infused Belgian wit, an India Brown Ale and a little bit of IPA on tap last night. We also had the Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale in bottles. If you drank the Belgian wit last night, we’d love to hear your thoughts. I can already feel an argument coming up on whether we should add less ginger next time. All in all, we had a good crowd, including some newcomers and some old-timers that I thought had completely forgotten about us. But then I remembered, how could anyone forget about us? We’re the poster children for Awesome. Aaaaand… SCENE.
